A man named Fred was working hard in his back garden, digging up the ground. After an hour of digging, Fred was very tired, so he sat down to rest. He laid his shovel down beside him and took off his cap. He wiped the sweat off his forehead with his handkerchief.
He shouted through the open window next to him. "Carol, my dear, guess who's thirsty? Could you bring me a cold drink, please? Water, or something?"
Carol, Fred's daughter, came out of the house and brought him a glass of lemonade. "Something cold and sweet," she said.
"Thanks, you are so kind," Fred said as he sipped the drink. "Will you please tell me if Andy comes to the front door? He's buying me some carrot seeds, and I need to know when he brings them."
"Sure," said Carol, "would you like to check to be certain the seeds are the ones you want?"
"Okay," Fred answered. "Come get me when Andy gets here. No, wait, I'll track in dirt. Better bring him out back instead. Then he picked up his shovel and began digging again.
Soon, there was a knock on the front door of the house, and Carol opened it. "Hi Andy, come on in," she greeted him. "Dad is out back, digging the vegetable garden."
Andy thanked her, nodded, walked through the house, and out the back door. "Hi Fred," he said, "hard at work, I see. I found three different kinds of seed for you. You take the ones you want and I'll use the rest."
"Oh, thanks, Andy," responded Fred, "let's see what you brought me. All of these look good. How about if we split the packages? Then we'll see whose carrots turn out the biggest. Okay?"
"Sounds like a good idea to me, " agreed Andy. "Need some help digging?"
