Verb Forms for Regular Verbs and Common Irregular Verbs

To Be, To Do, To Go, To Have

Instructions for forms are given for the regular verb to walk and notes added for making the forms for the irregular verbs to be, to do, to go, and to have.

1. Simple Present (walk)
[present formed from verb stem inflected for person and number walk/walks]

To Be To Do To Go To Have Regular Verbs
Infinitive to be to do to go to have to walk
Bare Stem be do go have walk
Past Participle been done gone had walked
Simple Present Tense
1st person singular I am I do I go I have I walk
2nd person singular you are you do you go you have you walk
3rd person singular he/she/it is he/she/it does he/she/it goes he/she/it has he/she/it walks
1st person plural we are we do we go we have we walk
2nd person plural you are you do you go you have you walk
3rd person plural they are they do they go they have they walk

2. Present Progressive (= Present Continuous) (am walking) (are walking) (is walking)
[Regular verbs: present form of "to be" inflected for person and number am/are/is
+ progressive formed from verb stem plus -ing walking]

to be - forms must take another word to complete: I am being clear, you are being clear, he is being clear
do, go and have - same as for walk: doing, going, having

3. Simple Past (walked)
[Regular verbs: past form of the verb, the same form as the past participle walked]

being, doing, going, and having, same as for walking

[modal auxiliary verb, will
+ bare infinitive walk]

be, do, go and have same as for walk

6. Future Progressive(= Future Continuous) (will be walking)

[auxiliary verb "to have" present form, inflected for person and number has/have
